You’ve probably heard that people fear public speaking more than death.
I can’t say for sure whether that’s true or hyperbole. But what I can tell you is that people had lots of questions about it at last week’s Commerce Lexington @330 Series event, where I had the honor of giving one of my most popular talks: “Think Like a Spokesperson: Communicate with Clarity, Confidence & Purpose in Any Role.”
For example: How do you engage with an angry customer? How do you overcome verbal fillers such as “um” and “like”? How do you get people to put down their phones and pay attention? (See, I told you they were good!)
When it comes to communication, I advise clients to practice these three C’s:
Clarity: Ensuring your message is clear, easy to understand, and free of jargon or ambiguity, so the audience fully grasps your point. Except in highly technical circumstances, aim to deliver a message that your grandmother and a middle schooler can equally understand.
Conciseness: Getting straight to the point without unnecessary words or filler. It’s that simple.
Consistency: Maintaining a uniform message across different communications, which builds trust and reinforces the information being shared. It’s important that everyone sing from the same songbook!
With some practice, it’s easy to add a fourth C: confidence! When you know your audience, are clear about your purpose, concise with your message and consistent in your delivery, I promise you will feel much more confident about communicating – and even public speaking – in the future.
One of the other questions I got a lot was whether I offer communications coaching and workshops for teams. The answer is yes! It’s one of my favorite parts of this work — blending my experience in communications and coaching to help people feel more confident landing their message every time.
If strengthening your or your team’s communication skills is on the horizon for 2026, I’d love to explore what that could look like together.
Taylor Swift said it best: “If I was a man, then I’d be the man.”
In the latest episode of the Wake Women podcast with Mary Tribble, I offer tips that empower women to communicate assertively without fear of being misjudged. Once labeled "bossy" as little girls because we knew what we wanted and weren't afraid to say so, Mary and I dove into what it really takes for women to show with confidence, lead with intention, and challenge the outdated double standards that persist in so many workplaces.
Brain Food
If you’ve ever taken on more responsibility at work with no new rewards, you’re far from alone. According to a recent report, two-thirds of U.S. workers say they’ve experienced “ghost growth,” or surface-level career growth that doesn’t translate to meaningful changes in pay or title. Job-hugging employees may be hesitant to leave in this market, but they’ll be the first ones to leave when the economy picks up.
In the Spotlight 1:1 Coaching
January’s the month for fresh starts and new intentions. It also happens to be the most popular time to begin 1:1 coaching. My early Q1 spots are already filling up with clients already considering next year's goals. If you’ve been thinking about leading with more intention and taking your career to the next level, let’s chat before the holidays are in full swing. A quick conversation can help you decide how you will show up in 2026.
Ho, Ho, No!
20 amazing women. One powerful reminder: you don't have to do it all. Thanks to those who attended Ho, Ho, No last night! We laughed, shared stories and gave ourselves an important gift — the permission to say yes only to what matters most.
